So why the Verde Valley?

What is it about this enchanted land of Red Rock and breath taking beauty that makes this area so “spiritually driven?”  There are the long rumored myths of Vortexes, which most old locals claim started with roadside maps meant to drive tourism.  Others firmly believe Vortexes are real and the spiritual power behind Sedona.  For me, I believe the spirituality lies in those who walked before us and left their amazing archaic sites for us to see.  Not only remnants from the Yavapai tribe, and the Sinagua before them, but some sites that can be attributed to prehistoric man.   Paintings and petroglyphs on red rock walls, ancient structures with fingers prints and impressions from ruins sculpted by hand.  Rocks stacked in pit houses.  You can’t help but feel the life at some of these amazing sites that are so often overlooked in a typical Sedona visit.  Palataki, Honoaki, Tuzigoot, Montezuma’s Well, and the Crane Petroglyphs, these are the sites that tell the tales of Sedona and the Verde Valley, and for me the true sources of spirituality.

Ghost hunting has become a popular pastime, fueled by countless television shows and movies that portray the paranormal as a tangible reality. While it's understandable to be captivated by the idea of the supernatural, it's essential to approach such claims with a healthy dose of skepticism and employ scientific methods to investigate.

The Equipment Arsenal
Many ghost hunting teams utilize a variety of tools and equipment to capture evidence of paranormal activity. While the effectiveness of these devices is often debated, they form the backbone of many investigations.

  • Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Meters: These devices measure electromagnetic fields, which are present in our environment due to electrical currents. Some believe that fluctuations in EMF readings indicate paranormal activity, but it's more likely due to electrical appliances or natural environmental factors.

  • Digital Recorders: Audio and video recorders are used to capture potential paranormal voices (EVP) or visual evidence. However, as discussed earlier, these recordings can often be misinterpreted.

  • Infrared Cameras: These cameras can detect temperature differences, which some believe can reveal cold spots associated with ghostly presence. However, as with EMF meters, temperature fluctuations are common in buildings and can have various explanations.

  • Dowsing Rods: These L-shaped rods are held by the investigator and are believed to react to paranormal energy. However, there's no scientific evidence to support the claim that dowsing rods can detect ghosts.

  • Spirit Boxes: These devices are claimed to facilitate communication with spirits by scanning radio frequencies. While some people believe they've captured intelligent responses, skeptics argue that random noise and the human mind's tendency to find patterns can lead to misinterpretation.

Investigation Techniques
While the equipment used in ghost hunting varies, the investigative methods tend to follow similar patterns:
  • Site History: Researching the history of a location can provide valuable context. Understanding the building's past occupants and events can help identify potential hotspots for paranormal activity.

  • Witness Interviews: Gathering firsthand accounts from people who claim to have experienced paranormal phenomena is crucial. However, it's essential to approach these accounts with a critical mind, considering potential biases and memory distortions.

  • Equipment Setup: Deploying the chosen equipment throughout the investigation area is a common practice. However, it's important to control for environmental factors that could influence the readings.

  • Data Collection: Recording audio, video, and environmental data is essential for analysis. However, it's crucial to maintain detailed logs of the investigation process, including equipment settings, time stamps, and any relevant observations.

  • Analysis and Debunking: The most critical step in any paranormal investigation is the thorough analysis of collected data. Applying scientific principles and considering alternative explanations can help separate fact from fiction.

Ethical Considerations
Ghost hunting should be conducted with respect for the location and its occupants. Obtaining permission to investigate a property is essential. Additionally, it's important to avoid disturbing the peace or causing distress to others.

Conclusion
While the allure of the paranormal is undeniable, it's crucial to approach ghost hunting with a skeptical mindset. By understanding the limitations of the equipment used and considering alternative explanations for purported paranormal phenomena, we can explore the world of the unknown without compromising our critical thinking skills. Remember, the pursuit of knowledge should always be grounded in evidence and reason.

Debunking Ghost Hunting Myths

1/27/2025

Ghost hunting has become a popular pastime, fueled by countless television shows and movies that portray the paranormal as a tangible reality. While it's understandable to be captivated by the idea of the supernatural, it's essential to approach such claims with a healthy dose of skepticism. Let's delve into some of the most common ghost hunting myths and explore the scientific explanations behind them.

Myth 1: Ghosts are Caught on Camera as Orbs
Orbs, those often spherical, translucent objects captured in photographs or videos, have become synonymous with ghostly activity. However, these mysterious specks are often misidentified. The reality is that orbs can be attributed to a variety of mundane sources, including dust particles, water droplets, lens flares, or even insects. Camera flashes can illuminate these particles, making them appear as floating orbs.

Myth 2: Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) is Proof of Spirits
EVP, the practice of analyzing recorded audio for alleged ghostly voices, has generated significant interest among paranormal enthusiasts. While it's undeniably intriguing to hear seemingly intelligible words amidst static or white noise, it's important to consider alternative explanations. The human brain is adept at finding patterns, even in random noise. What might sound like a voice could simply be a random combination of sounds that our brains interpret as meaningful. Additionally, post-production editing can enhance or even create apparent voices.

Myth 3: Cold Spots Indicate Ghostly Presence
A sudden drop in temperature is often cited as evidence of paranormal activity. However, temperature fluctuations within buildings are common and can be attributed to various factors. Drafts, HVAC systems, and even open windows can create localized areas of cold air. Moreover, the human body's perception of temperature can be influenced by psychological factors, such as fear or excitement.

Myth 4: Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) Are Linked to Hauntings
EMFs, produced by electrical devices, have been suggested as a potential cause of paranormal activity. While some studies have explored the relationship between EMFs and human health, there's no scientific evidence to support the claim that they can cause ghostly manifestations. It's more likely that fluctuations in EMF readings are due to environmental factors or equipment malfunction.

Myth 5: All Paranormal Activity is Malevolent
Popular culture often portrays ghosts as malevolent entities intent on causing harm or terror. While some accounts describe frightening experiences, many people report encounters that are neutral or even benevolent. It's essential to approach the topic with an open mind and avoid making generalizations based on limited information.

The Importance of Critical Thinking
While it's natural to be fascinated by the unknown, it's equally important to approach paranormal claims with a critical mindset. By understanding the potential scientific explanations for purported paranormal phenomena, we can develop a more nuanced perspective. It's essential to distinguish between evidence-based investigation and sensationalized entertainment.
By applying critical thinking and scientific principles, we can explore the world around us with curiosity and wonder, while maintaining a healthy skepticism towards the unexplained.

The Origins of Spirit of the Past

Spirit of the Past, how does it all come together?  Well, there is a well know motto amongst the denizens of the Verde Valley that the Valley itself is a living, breathing entity and when you come in to make it your home, it either decides if you fit and you become a permanent fixture.  Maybe you leave for small stints, but you undoubtedly return and ultimately you stay here.  For those who don’t fit, it spits you out as fast as you came in!  I landed here in 2010, a bartender by trade, a hospitality man, by spirit.  I was leaving the big city to slow things down and focus on my growing family, to be closer to our bar Sundance’s in Prescott.  Upon my arrival in Northern Arizona, I fell into the rebirth of Old Town Cottonwood, my Father was then City Manager and I had really enjoyed the burgeoning Wine Region that was just in its infancy.  Cottonwood decided I belonged and almost immediately the Spirits of the Past began to speak to me.

One of the earliest moments I knew belonged was when I would close the first little wine and beer bar that had just opened in Old Town.  The bar was in an old gas station and my family, and I, had settled into a store front in Old Town a mere 200 yards away.  We owned a cheese and chocolate shop in the front and had a nice little apartment in the back of the storefront.  It was winter and I would close up the bar around 10pm and walk home.  Even then I could walk down the center of the street, because there was no traffic, no cars coming, the town was ghostly quiet…except, that it wasn’t.  I could stand at the south end of the street and look to the north, and you could feel the activity, it was surreal, other worldly.  Like you could see the hustle and bustle of an active nightlife with the ghosts of pool halls, and dance halls, and a special place called the Bungalow.  Cultural epicenters for an era long gone.  Even then I knew this town had a tale to tell.

What was particularly interesting to me, was how Cottonwood had an identity steeped in alcohol, its previous “hey day” was the Prohibition Era.  Almost 100 years later the town was securing a new identity as a new wine region.  This also got me thinking about the double meaning that the word “spirit” has.  For alcohol it came to be called spirits in the vein of “breath” or “essence,” the goals of capturing through distillation.  Then of course the definition associated with humans, the non-physical part of a person, the emotions, the character…the soul.  This was the beginning of me coming to understand the essence or soul of this area I had just become part of, and my role to understand its roots and perpetuate its story, keeping alive the Spirit of the Past.
