Spirit of the Past, how does it all come together?  Well, there is a well know motto amongst the denizens of the Verde Valley that the Valley itself is a living, breathing entity and when you come in to make it your home, it either decides if you fit and you become a permanent fixture.  Maybe you leave for small stints, but you undoubtedly return and ultimately you stay here.  For those who don’t fit, it spits you out as fast as you came in!  I landed here in 2010, a bartender by trade, a hospitality man, by spirit.  I was leaving the big city to slow things down and focus on my growing family, to be closer to our bar Sundance’s in Prescott.  Upon my arrival in Northern Arizona, I fell into the rebirth of Old Town Cottonwood, my Father was then City Manager and I had really enjoyed the burgeoning Wine Region that was just in its infancy.  Cottonwood decided I belonged and almost immediately the Spirits of the Past began to speak to me. 

One of the earliest moments I knew belonged was when I would close the first little wine and beer bar that had just opened in Old Town.  The bar was in an old gas station and my family, and I, had settled into a store front in Old Town a mere 200 yards away.  We owned a cheese and chocolate shop in the front and had a nice little apartment in the back of the storefront.  It was winter and I would close up the bar around 10pm and walk home.  Even then I could walk down the center of the street, because there was no traffic, no cars coming, the town was ghostly quiet…except, that it wasn’t.  I could stand at the south end of the street and look to the north, and you could feel the activity, it was surreal, other worldly.  Like you could see the hustle and bustle of an active nightlife with the ghosts of pool halls, and dance halls, and a special place called the Bungalow.  Cultural epicenters for an era long gone.  Even then I knew this town had a tale to tell.

What was particularly interesting to me, was how Cottonwood had an identity steeped in alcohol, its previous “hey day” was the Prohibition Era.  Almost 100 years later the town was securing a new identity as a new wine region.  This also got me thinking about the double meaning that the word “spirit” has.  For alcohol it came to be called spirits in the vein of “breath” or “essence,” the goals of capturing through distillation.  Then of course the definition associated with humans, the non-physical part of a person, the emotions, the character…the soul.  This was the beginning of me coming to understand the essence or soul of this area I had just become part of, and my role to understand its roots and perpetuate its story, keeping alive the Spirit of the Past.
